"Life influences life. It is the collision of different lights and colors that together create the true brilliance of existence." This is the core philosophy of Teacher Xu Rong, founder of the nonprofit organization Aixingbao.

On March 29, VIVA la Vida (VIVA) partnered with Aixingbao to host an Autism Art Workshop for Social Inclusion, bringing together autistic individuals of all ages and their families for a collaborative life portrait session. The event was held in conjunction with the WHALE ROOM Shanghai x VIVA special exhibition, titled Can You Hear Me? When Two Forms of Life Meet in a Limited Space: On Belugas and Us, an artistic exploration advocating for equal dialogue with diverse forms of life.

Just as beluga whales communicate through a singular, unique language, the autistic community possesses its own extraordinary ways of expressing emotion and meaning. With deep reverence for neurodiversity, we stepped into their world—hoping to ensure their inner universes are seen, understood, and genuinely cherished.

Video Recap: Autistic Choir Performance at the "Can You Hear Me?" Exhibition

Echoes of the Heart:

Music as a Language of Resilience

At the exhibition opening, Teacher Xu led an autistic performance ensemble in delivering pure, moving melodies that radiated a profound love for life.

She shared the remarkable story behind their rendition of the German art song "On Wings of Song". The ensemble dedicated nine months of relentless practice just to master the first verse and chorus. Every single note represented day after day of quiet determination. Accompanying the choir was Dongdong, a gifted young visually impaired pianist who translated the world's beauty into fluid, expressive piano music for everyone present.

When the ensemble performed the song "Snail", it mirrored their everyday reality. As Teacher Xu noted, autistic individuals are like snails climbing steadily upward—slow in stride, yet unwavering in resolve. Step by step, they are journeying toward a vibrant sky of their own.

The Scale of the Individual:

Co-Creating Life Portraits

The following day, participants entered the vibrant creative lab for an interactive art therapy exploration titled "The Scale of the Individual".

The room was adorned with paintings and handcrafted artworks by neurodivergent peers. This visual environment immediately fostered a sense of safety and resonance, bridging emotional distances.

During the co-creation workshop, autistic youth and their families picked up brushes together to sketch their inner landscapes. As colors met paper, each brushstroke transformed into a direct dialogue with the world, offering observers a rare window into their rich, multidimensional minds.

Three Windows into the Soul:

The Language of Paintings

Every canvas created during the workshop served as an authentic projection of the artist's inner world, breaking down societal stereotypes regarding autism:

  • The Boundless Explorer (Age 66, Family Member): A parent painted an expansive landscape featuring layered cliffs, a small boat drifting on emerald waves, and seabirds soaring into the sky. The artwork is a powerful reminder that regardless of life's pace, families retain infinite strength to explore the world and embrace freedom.

  • The Vibrant Realist (Age 25, Autistic Youth): Using bold, saturated primary colors, this young creator depicted a scene overflowing with everyday joy: mushrooms basking in warm sunlight, a speeding bicycle, and a pair of comfortable slippers. The canvas radiates youthful vitality and an unmistakable passion for daily life.

  • The Visionary Planner (Age 36, Autistic Adult): With endearing, charming brushstrokes, this artist illustrated a horse carrying traditional copper coins, paired with the witty caption "Horse brings wealth" (a pun on the Chinese phrase for "immediate success"). The piece powerfully highlights that autistic adults hold aspirations, value financial independence, and actively yearn to build meaningful futures.

These multigenerational creations confirm that every autistic individual possesses an independent will, distinct creative gifts, and limitless potential for growth.

The Reality of Neurodiversity:

Why Social Inclusion Matters

The journey toward maturity for autistic individuals is often accompanied by systemic challenges at every life stage:

  • Ages 2–7 (Early Intervention): Following a diagnosis, over 95% of families invest significant financial resources into medical and behavioral therapies. Yet, parents frequently struggle to evaluate institutional quality or measure tangible developmental outcomes.

  • Ages 7–16 (School Years): Parents naturally hope early support will enable their children to integrate into mainstream classrooms. However, facing limited instructional hours, intense academic pressure, and a lack of dedicated classroom accommodations, many children are ultimately forced to transition to specialized schools.

  • Age 16+ (Adulthood & Employment): Due to a lack of structured social integration training, autistic adults face heightened isolation and workplace discrimination. Public empathy remains insufficient, and the minority who secure employment often experience marginalization or bullying.

True social integration is never a one-sided endeavor; it requires a bridge between special-needs families and society at large. For ten years, Aixingbao has remained dedicated to providing free public programs, teaching practical integration skills, and empowering autistic youth to enter the workplace. We advocate for a global community defined by equality and respect—where empathy illuminates the path forward for every neurodivergent star.

Seeing Each Other, Seeing Ourselves

We firmly believe that every autistic individual moves to their own rhythm and holds unique creative gifts. They possess the potential to thrive within the community and create lasting social value on their own terms.

By allowing them to grow toward their own light and take root in an inclusive society, they can walk a path of singular brilliance along their own life trajectory.
